The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

When Gil Scott-Heron wrote ” The Revolution will not be televised” in 1970 I’m sure he was influenced by the sociopolitical issues of his time. The Western world was changing and people were finding their voice. There was an increased awareness of political and economic liberty for women and minorities. People were united in opposition against the Vietnam War; nuclear weapons, distrusted the government and big business. There was also a movement in advocating for world peace and the environment.

Fast forward to 2013 we find ourselves in another Revolution that will not be televised on the main stream media outlets. This revolution is not going to take place out in the streets with people rioting with pitch forks and torches. It’s going to take place in our homes, at our kitchen tables and in the grocery store isles. More and more people are taking part in the revolution, some of them unaware, by choosing what products to feed their families. Whether you realize it or not where and how you spend your hard-earned dollars has more power and more of a lasting impact than rioting in the street. It has the power to force our food industry to start providing healthy and safe products for our families.

So your asking “Okay, Lisa what is this revolution you’re talking about?”.  It’s about the health risks of Genetically Modified Organisms or GMOS.

First let me throw this disclaimer out there: I am by no means a scientist or an expert in this field. I am just a Mom that has a desire to provide the best possible health and food choices for my family. The main reason why I started this blog is to be able to have a forum to share information and tips on how you can provide healthy choices for your family.

So for you newcomers, you’re probably wondering what is a GMO?

GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.

Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit.

Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.

So your probably thinking GMOs are sprayed full of pesticide, lack nutrition and decrease in yield but surely they are safe for human consumption. The FDA wouldn’t have approved them to be on our supermarket shelves if they were not safe? Right?!

In 2009, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) stated that, “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with genetically modified (GM) food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. The AAEM has asked physicians to advise all patients to avoid GM food.

Say what?! When I first read this I nearly fell out of my chair. Then I starting thinking about how many people who I personally knew with infertility, immune problems, faulty insulin regulation (diabetes) and just overall poor health. Again I  am not a scientist, doctor or researcher but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to start connecting the dots. I really recommend that you spend time browsing the Non GMO Project and The Institute for Responsible Technology websites.  Both websites provide the latest GMO information, articles, newsletters and apps that you can download to your smart phone.

So your saying” Lisa, this is great information but what do I do now.” or ” I love to just throw out all the food in my cabinets and go organic but that’s too expensive“!

I’m not going to b.s. you and say ” It’s easy to change your eating habits” or ” Buy only organic”. The truth is organic and non gmo products are more expensive because they are not subsidized by the United States Government. Look I get it! I have a family of five myself and our 2nd largest monthly expense (the first being our mortgage) is food and the downside for us is that we live in Hawaii where everything just costs more. Which is why I started this blog to help give you cost saving tips and strategies. The bonus for you is that I love to cook! Not to toot my own horn but I am a pretty good cook! So I will also be sharing in my blog some of my families favorite and cost savings recipes.

So here are 5 tips to help you get started now.

1. Menu plan

Initially it will take some time to start but once you have it down it does get easier.  You will spend less TIME  and MONEY at the grocery store. There is one thing that you need to do in order to really make it work. BUY only what is on your list! It’s going to take discipline to stick to the list! Believe me I have caught myself more than once justifying to myself  that ” It was on sale!” or ” It was buy one get one free!” knowing that I didn’t need the first one to begin with!

2. Make things from scratch

I can hear you grumbling already! “Lisa , I don’t have time…. I work a full-time job….I have 3 kids…. blah blah blah”. I am not here to make anyone feel bad or to beat you up. I get it; your busy, you work full-time and being a Mom or Dad is an around the clock gig. The truth of the matter is do you REALLY want to trade your health and your children’s health for convenience? Here’s the thing, yes it may take a little extra planning and time on your part but in the long run it will SAVE you money. I think everybody could save a little money nowadays. So instead of buying those chocolate chip cookies, you know the ones, blue bag with ingredients you can’t even pronounce, make your own. It is cheaper, healthier and tastes a whole lot better. Again, I’ll be posting my yummy chocolate chip cookie recipe later in the blog. The recipe makes 3 dozen cookies so you can freeze the leftover’s to bake later.

3. Buy Local

Farmer Markets are great not only are you getting fresh produce that was most likely harvested that day, it is more affordable and you are supporting your local economy.

4. Get Creative

Plant your own garden or join a Community garden. Community Gardens are popping up all over the country. If you don’t have the time or farming not your thing. Look into joining a Community Supported Agriculture program.  To join a CSA you usually purchase shares based on your family size via a membership and the farmer provides you with a weekly box of seasonal produce. The benefit is that you get fresh seasonal produce at an affordable price and you get to know the farmers that grew your food.  Local Harvest has a great website that provides nationwide information on Farmer Markets, CSA and Coops.

5. Go easy on yourself

This is the most important tip of all, go easy on yourself. This is not a competition it is a lifestyle change. It is not going to happen overnight and not everyone in your family is going to be on board. It wasn’t and sometimes it is still not easy with my kids but it is getting better. If you have older kids expect some resistance but eventually they will get over it and adjust. Believe me it will get easier! Nothing can be worse than your 13-year-old daughter screaming at you in the middle of the grocery store ” What you mean Mom, I can’t eat Frosted Flakes anymore?!”.  So to avoid that happening to you when go shopping leave your kids at home!
